A Legacy of Doc & Gayle Young

The AAA Foundation Food Drive is a vital community initiative organized by the Austin Apartment Association (AAA) Foundation. Every year, this program brings together local apartment communities, businesses, and volunteers to provide food and meals to families across Austin. The Food Drive reflects our commitment to fostering a sense of unity and support within the community, ensuring everyone can celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday.

History

What started as a humble initiative in 1986 with $600 in donations has grown into a cornerstone event in the Austin community, collectively raising over $1,000,000 in the 38-year history. Founded by volunteer Steve Cartelli and propelled by the dedicated efforts of AAA volunteer member Michael "Doc" Young, this initiative has provided over 24,350 holiday meal kits to Austin residents.

How It Works

Monetary Donations

The AAA Foundation collects monetary donations from generous individuals and businesses throughout the fall. These funds are used to purchase grocery items for household meal kits which include non-perishable food, and gift cards when funds are available.

Packing and Distribution

Volunteers from the Austin Apartment Association community come together to assemble the meal kits. Once packed, the meal kits are distributed to families in need, ensuring they have everything they need for a meal around the Thanksgiving holiday.

Community Engagement

The Food Drive is more than just fundraising and an assembly line; it is a community-building effort that encourages active participation from all members of the Austin Apartment Association and brings awareness to essential needs such as food insecurity, in our community. By volunteering, donating, and spreading awareness, our industry members contribute to a collective effort that makes a tangible difference in the lives of Austin families.

Why It Matters

Addressing Food Insecurity

Food insecurity is a significant challenge in the Austin Apartment Association's 11-county service area, affecting 347,060 residents, or approximately 15% of the population.1 These counties include Travis, Williamson, Hays, Burnet, Caldwell, Bastrop, Gillespie, Blanco, Lee, Fayette, and Llano counties. This pervasive issue becomes even more pronounced during the holiday season, a time traditionally associated with abundance and celebration, yet many families face the harsh reality of not having enough to eat.

The AAA Foundation Food Drive is dedicated to addressing this pressing need. Our mission goes beyond just providing food; we aim to deliver nutritious meals and foster a sense of hope and community spirit. By focusing on Thanksgiving, we strive to ensure that every family has the opportunity to partake in the holiday's joy and tradition, without limitations brought on by financial circumstances.

Strengthening Community Bonds

The Food Drive fosters a spirit of collaboration and generosity within the Austin community. By working together towards a common goal, participants strengthen their connections and build a more supportive and compassionate community.
